The Godfather is an American epic mafia gangster film directed by Francis Ford Coppola in 1972, based on Mario Puzo's best-selling 1969 novel. It is generally regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made, receiving 26 award nominations and winning 12 of them. Set in 1945, The film stars Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall and Diane Keaton among a large cast of talented actors of the time. The story follows the family of Don Vito Corleone, on the day of his daughter Connie's wedding in New York City, 1945. Don Vito is head of the family, has various political affiliations while being a crime boss of a business founded on gambling, bootlegging, prostitution and union corruption. The plot of the first movie (of three) focusses on Vito's youngest son Michael (played by Al Pacino) becoming more involved in the family business after a mob war breaks out and Vito's life is threatened. The film still serves as the most iconic film depicting Italian American mob movie.
